Course Overview:

Students will be taught the Spanish alphabet, greetings/introductions, numbers, days of the week, months of the year, seasons, the weather, dates, pronouns, the gender of nouns, plurals, adjectives, the family, things in the home, prepositions, the community, clothing, sports, comparisons, asking questions, and telling time. Students will learn about Spanish verbs, including how to conjugate –ar,  -er, and –ir verbs, the difference between ser and estar (both mean “to be”), the different uses of tener (to have, plus 5 other uses), and the conjugations of such irregular verbs as ir (to go), dar (to give) and poder (to be able to).  We will not use a textbook in this class. Students will receive direct instruction and will have worksheets for practice, which we will usually do and go over in class. Learning will be supplemented and reinforced with some instructional video clips and games.  Students will also learn about culture by watching a few excellent videos about Spanish speaking countries, doing a video worksheet, and having a class discussion about the video.
